1954 Bristol 403
1954 Bristol 403
The Bristol Aeroplane Company of Great Britain, renowned for producing some of WWII’s most formidable aircraft, faced a surplus of highly skilled workers at war’s end. Rather than disband its workforce, the company pivoted to automobile manufacturing, utilizing its aircraft engineering expertise and, significantly, benefiting from postwar reparations—including access to BMW’s design facilities.
The result was a line of extraordinary vehicles, and the Bristol 403 is a prime example. Produced from 1953 to 1955 in Filton, England, only 287 units of this hand-crafted model were made. The 403 features an aluminum body constructed using Carrozzeria Touring of Milan’s Superleggera (super lightweight) technique, ensuring a sophisticated and light structure without sacrificing strength.
This particular example is one of the final dozen 403s built, making it especially rare. It is powered by the B2 version of the 2.0L inline six-cylinder engine, a refined pre-war BMW design delivering 105 hp. It also includes a Laycock de Normanville overdrive, a factory-approved upgrade for enhanced touring capability.
Unlike its more ostentatious contemporaries from Rolls-Royce or Bentley, the Bristol 403 was designed for discerning owners seeking quiet sophistication and top-tier engineering. In fact, it was priced higher than many Rolls-Royces at the time, a testament to its exclusivity and quality.
This car has been owned for the past 30 years by a dedicated Bristol enthusiast and was featured at the prestigious 1996 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como, Italy. The owner has maintained comprehensive records and receipts throughout his stewardship.
Ready for long-distance touring, this 403 is not just a rare collector’s piece—it’s a true driver’s car. Available for viewing in Middleburg, Virginia, just minutes from Dulles International Airport and Reston, VA.
